Mohannad Al-Saghir

Mohannad Al-Saghir is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences, Ohio University, Zanesville Campus. He has been a faculty member since 2006 and currently serves as Curator of the Ohio University Zanesville Herbarium. His academic work spans research, teaching, and service, with a strong emphasis on undergraduate engagement and community outreach.

Dr. Al-Saghir's research focuses on Plant Systematics and Evolution, particularly the molecular phylogenetics of economically important genera such as Pistacia, barley, peanut, and soybean. His work employs molecular markers (RAPD, AFLP) and morphological data to study genetic diversity, species relationships, and historical biogeography. He also investigates hybridization and pollination biology in flowering plants. Additionally, he is involved in microbiology-related projects, including Clostridium difficile detection and water quality analysis, and promotes undergraduate research through initiatives like RADIUS and the Green Bobcats environmental club.

The analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on plant systematics, with recurring themes in Pistacia taxonomy, chromosome studies, and genetic diversity in crops. He also contributes to science education and public health microbiology, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach that bridges basic research with practical applications.
