Dr. Mohammed Akaaboune is a Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). He holds a DEA and Ph.D. from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris 6), France, and completed postdoctoral training under Jeff Lichtman at Washington University School of Medicine. His research focuses on synaptic protein regulation at neuromuscular junctions (NMJs), particularly in health and disease contexts such as neuromuscular disorders and obesity.
Key research interests include postsynaptic protein dynamics, the role of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex, and mechanisms underlying synaptic disassembly in obesity. Dr. Akaaboune has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellowship and a finalist position in the James L. O'Leary Prize Competition in Neuroscience. His work employs multidisciplinary approaches, combining optical imaging, molecular biology, and mouse models to study neuromuscular systems.
Publications span over two decades, with recent studies examining mitochondrial alterations in dystrobrevin-deficient mice and synaptic disassembly in high-fat diet-induced obesity. His lab's findings contribute to understanding neuromuscular disease mechanisms and metabolic influences on synaptic stability.
