Mohammad Reza Baneshi is a Research Fellow at the School of Public Health, University of Queensland, where he joined in 2020. He also serves as a biostatistician at the Australian Women and Girls' Health Research Centre and holds an adjunct position as a Professor of Biostatistics at Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran.
Education:
- PhD in Biostatistics from University of Edinburgh (2005-2009)
- M.S. in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (2000-2003)
- B.Sc. in Statistics from Shiraz University (1996-2000)
Dr. Baneshi is a biostatistician with extensive research experience in multiple facets of biostatistics and epidemiology. His primary research interests include analysis of time-to-event data, analysis of longitudinal data, and size estimation of stigmatized groups most at risk of HIV/AIDS. He has made substantial contributions to applying size-estimation methods to marginalized populations such as people with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, men who have had sex with men, and injection drug users. In 2022, he co-authored the reference book on size estimation methods. His work bridges statistical methodology with practical public health applications, particularly in women's health and multimorbidity studies.
His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on women's health, multimorbidity patterns, and methodological innovations in biostatistics. His research spans diverse areas including endometriosis, cardiovascular disease prediction, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment in healthcare settings, and HIV/AIDS epidemiology. The publications reveal a consistent application of advanced statistical methods to address complex public health questions, with particular emphasis on longitudinal data analysis and network scale-up methodology.
Dr. Baneshi has secured multiple research grants, primarily from the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in Tehran and the United Nations Development Programme, focusing on HIV population size estimation, abortion rate estimation, and other public health initiatives. His work has significantly contributed to understanding hidden populations and health issues in Iran and Afghanistan.
He is affiliated with the Australian Women and Girls' Health Research Centre at the University of Queensland, where his biostatistical expertise supports research on women's health issues across multiple domains including reproductive health, chronic disease patterns, and mental health.
