California Institute of Technology (Caltech)معرفی
Mohammad Mirhosseini is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), holding appointments in both the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics within Caltech's Division of Engineering and Applied Science. His research program focuses on experimental quantum engineering at the intersection of superconducting circuits, phononic devices, and photonic systems operating at millikelvin temperatures.
His educational background includes a B.S. from the University of Tehran (2010), an M.S. from the University of Rochester (2013), and a Ph.D. (2015). Following his doctoral studies, he served as a Visiting Associate at Caltech in 2020 before being appointed Assistant Professor later that same year.
Mirhosseini's research explores the experimental realization of quantum interfaces between different physical systems, with particular emphasis on developing hybrid architectures that combine superconducting qubits with chip-based phononic and photonic devices. His long-term goal is to establish practical interfaces between circuit quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics for applications in quantum computing, communication, and sensing. His work demonstrates particular innovation in creating quantum transducers that bridge microwave and optical domains, addressing a critical challenge in quantum networking.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on quantum transduction, phononic quantum memory, chiral quantum optics, and microwave-phonon interactions, with significant contributions to understanding and engineering quantum interactions in waveguide environments. The research consistently pushes the boundaries of quantum hardware by developing novel devices that operate at the quantum regime while maintaining practical engineering considerations.
His scientific achievements have been recognized through several prestigious awards:
- NSF CAREER Award
- 2023 AFOSR Young Investigator Research Program Award
- Okawa Foundation Research Grant
- 2022 KNI-Wheatley Scholar
Mirhosseini leads the Quantum Engineering Lab at Caltech, which pursues three main research directions: (1) developing new quantum computing hardware, (2) creating hybrid architectures by combining superconducting qubits with phononic and photonic devices at millikelvin temperatures, and (3) refining control and understanding of medium-sized quantum systems. The lab actively seeks enthusiastic scientists and engineers to expand its research capabilities, with opportunities regularly posted in the Openings section of their website.
