University of Newcastle Australia (UON)معرفی
Dr. Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where he contributes as a Casual Academic with expertise in environmental chemistry and remediation. His academic journey began at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh, where he earned both his Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Chemistry (1996) and Master of Science in Chemistry with a focus on physical and inorganic chemistry (1999). He completed his PhD in 2004 from the School of Environmental Studies at Jadavpur University, India, focusing on groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh.
- PhD, Jadavur University - Kolkata - India
- Master of Science, Jahangirnagar University
- Bachelor of Science, Jahangirnagar University
Dr. Rahman's research primarily centers on arsenic contamination in groundwater and its environmental and health impacts, though his work extends to other trace elements (cadmium, lead, mercury), nanomaterials including nano-encapsulated pesticides, and organic contaminants. He possesses extensive expertise in analytical and speciation techniques for metals and metalloids using ion chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS). His work elegantly combines laboratory-based studies with field surveys to understand arsenic chemistry, toxicity mechanisms, speciation, food chain transfer, and human health risks. Over the past decade, his research has expanded to include environmental nanomaterials, water quality assessment, and innovative remediation techniques.
Analysis of Dr. Rahman's recent publications reveals a strong focus on environmental contamination issues, particularly heavy metals in agricultural systems, innovative remediation techniques using nanomaterials, and water quality assessment. His work demonstrates an evolving research trajectory from fundamental arsenic studies toward broader environmental contamination issues and sustainable remediation solutions, with increasing emphasis on practical applications for environmental protection and public health.
- Jaharwal Nehru Memorial Scholarship Scheme
- Visiting Scientist Travel Award from National Institute of Health Sciences, Tokyo, Japan
- Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship
Dr. Rahman has built significant national and international research collaborations, particularly with scientists in the USA, UK, India, Bangladesh, China, and Nigeria. His work on arsenic contamination has received considerable media attention, with findings featured in prestigious publications including Nature Magazine, New Scientist, and The Hindu. He was invited by the Crawford Fund, Australia to organize a training workshop on arsenic for young scientists from developing countries. Dr. Rahman serves as a research higher degree supervisor at the University of Newcastle, welcoming both national and international applicants to his research programs.
Based at the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER) at the University of Newcastle since 2015, Dr. Rahman previously held research positions at the Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation (CERAR) at the University of South Australia from 2004 to 2015, where he progressed from Research Associate to Senior Research Fellow and Laboratory Manager. His international reputation as an environmental scientist is reflected in his extensive publication record and collaborative research network.
