Dr. Mohammad Latifi is a Research Professor (Class II) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, where he established his research career starting as a postdoctoral fellow in 2012. He leads the Advanced Process Engineering Research Laboratory (PEARL) and holds an NSERC-Discovery grant focused on metal recycling and chemical recycling of plastics from electronic waste. His industrial collaborations include projects with TOTAL (France), OCP Group (Morocco), Johnson Matthey Battery Materials (Canada), and other international partners.
Dr. Latifi completed his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University (Canada, 2012), M.Sc. at University of Tehran (Iran, 2003), and B.Sc. at Babol Noushiravani University of Technology (Iran, 2001). Prior to joining academia, he worked in Iran's oil and petrochemical industry with companies including NIPC, NIOC, and IOEC.
His research focuses on sustainable process engineering with emphasis on:
- Clean energy technologies including biomass conversion and syngas production
- Advanced reactor designs like induction-heated fluidized beds and microwave-assisted systems
- Resource recovery through metal recycling and mineral processing
- Electrification of industrial processes for reduced carbon footprint
Analysis of his recent publications reveals strong focus on sustainable chemical processes, with recurring themes in microwave-assisted reactions, fluidized bed reactor design, waste valorization, and materials for energy applications. His work frequently bridges fundamental reaction engineering with industrial implementation.
Dr. Latifi contributes to academic training through courses including:
- GCH-6201: Catalysis and applied kinetics
- GCH-6902: Design of gas-solid reactors
- GCH-8103: Biomass conversion
- GCH-8104: Mineral Processing
