Dr. Mohamed Saleh is a Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). He holds a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship (2024-25) and previously served as a Professor of Economics at the University of Toulouse Capitole (2019–2022). His expertise spans Political Economy, the Economic History of Identity, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Education: PhD (2012) and MA (2006) in Economics from the University of Southern California; BSc (2003) in Economics from Cairo University.
Research Focus: Dr. Saleh investigates the intersection of fiscal policy, identity formation, and political economy in MENA. Key themes include tax-induced religious conversions, labor coercion, and historical roots of political authoritarianism. His work employs microeconometrics and archival data, including digitized 19th-century Egyptian censuses.
