Mitchell P. Weikert, M.D., M.S., is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine and serves as the Residency Program Director at the Cullen Eye Institute. Prior to medicine, he earned degrees in electrical and biomedical engineering and worked in the petroleum industry. He completed his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by residency and a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of Utah. His roles include Medical Director of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas (2010–2016) and Residency Program Director (2012–2023). He holds multiple board certifications, including the American Board of Ophthalmology (2004–2034).
Dr. Weikert’s research focuses on biomedical optics, anterior segment imaging, and intraocular lens calculations. He has authored over 75 peer-reviewed articles, 20 book chapters, and edited 3 textbooks. Notable awards include the Baylor College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretariat Award, and recognition in 'The Best Doctors in America' since 2008.
His professional interests span corneal diseases (e.g., keratoconus, Fuchs dystrophy), refractive surgery (LASIK/PRK), anterior segment surgery, and corneal transplantation. He is actively involved in clinical trials and has served as a co-investigator on grants funded by the National Eye Institute, Alcon, and others. Dr. Weikert also maintains affiliations with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and multiple international societies.
His recent publications emphasize advancements in IOL power calculations, corneal biomechanics, and outcomes of novel surgical techniques, reflecting his commitment to improving refractive and corneal surgical outcomes through innovation and evidence-based practice.
