Professor Misha Sumetsky is a leading academic at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University. He holds a Professorship in nanophotonics and quantum technologies. His research focuses on optical microresonators, quantum computing, and surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP). He has pioneered breakthroughs in optical delay lines, microfluidics, and sub-angstrom precision fabrication techniques.
Education:
- PhD in Mechanics of Gases and Plasma, St. Petersburg State University (1979)
Research Interests: His work spans electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, and advanced photonics. Notable achievements include inventing SNAP technology, demonstrating thermally tunable microresonators, and developing theories on optical nanofiber tunneling. His research has led to over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 patents.
Grants & Awards: He leads major grants such as the £1.167M EPSRC project on picometre SNAP (2024-2028) and the Leverhulme Trust-funded 'Light Microtruck' initiative (2022-2025). Awards include the Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award and Fellowship in the Optical Society of America.
Supervision: Currently supervising three PhD students. His lab focuses on quantum photonics, microresonator technologies, and photonic circuits.
