Miroslav Marence

Miroslav Marence serves as Associate Professor in Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education since 2009, leading the Storage and Hydropower core. Simultaneously, he has been head of the tunneling department and hydropower/dam expert at AFRY Austria GmbH (formerly Poyry and Verbundplan) since 1994, designing international hydropower projects across Austria, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Bhutan, Lao, Thailand, Bulgaria, Finland, Sweden, and India.

His research centers on dam engineering (earth fill, concrete, and arch dams), analytical and numerical modeling of dam structures, climate change impacts on reservoirs, water and GHG footprint assessment, and sustainable operation of hydropower systems. He pioneers low-head hydropower solutions for ungauged rivers and existing infrastructure ('hidden treasure' applications), with over 60 peer-reviewed publications emphasizing environmental/social sustainability in renewable energy production.

Dr. Marence leads the capacity building work package in EU Horizon 2020 HYPOSO project (No 857851) for developing countries and contributes to ALPHEUS project (No 883553) on grid stability through low-head pumped hydro. His academic role includes mentoring graduate students in hydraulic engineering while applying practical expertise from global consulting projects.

He manages AFRY Austria GmbH's tunneling department team on international hydropower infrastructure development and collaborates within IHE Delft's Hydraulic Engineering department on climate-resilient water solutions, including Netherlands-focused research on low-head hydropower in Gelderland province weirs and shiplocks.
