Prof. Mirko Schaper is the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Head of the Department of Materials Science at Paderborn University since 2017 and 2013, respectively. He holds a Doctorate (1999–2005) and Habilitation (2010) in Materials Science from Leibniz University Hannover. His research focuses on microstructural evolution in alloys, additive manufacturing, and sustainable materials. He leads projects like MADE3D (Multi-Material Design in 3D Printing) and contributes to the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 285. Prof. Schaper chairs the Direct Manufacturing Research Center and Institute for Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems. He is an Honorary Member of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences and actively engages with scientific societies like the German Society for Materials Science.
Education: Studies in Mechanical Engineering (1990–1998), Ph.D. under Heinz Haferkamp (1999–2005), Habilitation on microstructural deformation of high-strength steels (2010). Professional roles include Senator of Paderborn University (2014–2017) and Chief Engineer at Leibniz University Hannover (2006–2013).
His research emphasizes structural analysis of aluminum, magnesium, and bio-inspired materials. Recent projects explore alloy processing via twin-roll casting and mechanical joinability of graded components. He advises on international journals and collaborates across institutions globally.
