Mirjana Roksandic

Mirjana Roksandic is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at The University of Winnipeg and coordinator of the interdisciplinary Bioanthropology program. She also serves as graduate faculty at the University of Manitoba and holds a fellowship with the DFG ‘Words, Bones, Genes, Tools’ program at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Her research focuses on Pleistocene hominin evolution in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as mortuary rituals among sedentary and semi-sedentary hunter-gatherers.

Current projects include excavations of Paleolithic hominins in Serbian caves and studies of mortuary practices in Cuba and Nicaragua. Her work examines human migration patterns, climatic adaptation, and social pressures influencing human mobility. Roksandic has secured grants from NSERC and SSHRC and was honored with the Nellie McClung Foundation Manitoba Women Trailblazer Award.

Her interdisciplinary approach bridges archaeology, anthropology, and bioanthropology, emphasizing global human prehistory and ritual behavior. She contributes to both academic research and public outreach through field schools, museum collaborations, and international partnerships.
