Miriam Marzen is a Researcher in the Department of Physical Geography at the Faculty of Geography/Geosciences, University of Trier, Germany. She holds a Doctorate in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) and is a Dipl.-Biogeographer. Her office is located on Campus II, Room F 109, and she can be reached at mmarzen@uni-trier.de.
Marzen's research focuses on soil erosion processes, particularly investigating the effects of wind-driven rain, aeolian transport, and splash erosion. Her work combines field measurements in diverse landscapes including Mediterranean regions, Moroccan argan woodlands, and German vineyards with controlled laboratory experiments using specialized equipment like the Portable Wind and Rainfall Simulator (WiReKa). She has developed innovative methods for quantifying soil particle detachment and transport under various environmental conditions.
Her publication record shows consistent output since 2009, with recent work (2020-2024) emphasizing experimental approaches to understand wind erosion in vineyards, quantification of dust emissions, and the development of mobile wind tunnel technologies. Her research has important implications for land management practices in erosion-prone areas and contributes significantly to the understanding of soil conservation techniques.
Marzen has collaborated extensively with researchers across Europe, including Thomas Iserloh, Johannes B. Ries, and other members of the geomorphology community. Her work appears in leading journals such as Geosciences, Land, Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, and Catena.
