Miriam Fleur Moffatt is a Professor of Respiratory Genetics at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. She has held leadership roles including Deputy Director of the National Centre for Mesothelioma Research and Co-Director of the Asmarley Centre for Genomic Medicine. With over 180 publications (h-index 57), her research focuses on genetics and genomics of respiratory diseases like asthma, mesothelioma, and COPD. Key contributions include identifying asthma-associated genes (ORMDL3), pioneering GWAS studies, and microbiome analysis in lung diseases.
Education: BSc (Hons) Microbiology from University of Reading, followed by doctoral research at University of Oxford under Professors Cookson and Hopkin. Career highlights include the first GWAS for asthma (2007), leading the GABRIEL consortium (2010), and discovering ORMDL3's role in HRV-induced asthma exacerbations (2018). Awards include the Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award (2011) and Imperial College's President's Medal (2014).
Research interests span asthma genetics, epigenetic regulation of IgE, microbiome-disease interactions, and translational genomic medicine. Collaborations include leading international consortia like GABRIEL and TAC. Current initiatives focus on microbial communities in severe asthma and fibrotic lung diseases.
Leadership roles include Institute Lead for Postdoctoral Scientists at Imperial College and Senior Visiting Research Fellowships at Green College, Oxford. Her work bridges basic science and clinical application, with direct impacts on biologic therapies targeting IL5/IL5RA pathways.
