Miriam Andrews

Dr. Miriam Andrews is a Research Fellow in Translational Heritage Science at the Institute of Sustainable Heritage, part of the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources at University College London. She joined UCL in June 2023, bringing together her multidisciplinary background in archaeology and materials science to address real-world heritage conservation challenges.

Education:

• PhD in Archaeology and Materials Science from the University of Southampton (EPSRC funded)
• Bachelor of Archaeology from the University of Southampton

Dr. Andrews' research focuses on applying scientific methodologies to heritage management and conservation. Her work spans preventive conservation, environmental monitoring of cultural collections, and archaeological science. She specializes in developing innovative analytical approaches that bridge engineering principles with heritage studies, particularly in assessing material deterioration and optimizing conservation interventions for historic buildings and collections. Her research has practical applications for heritage policy and management.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on quantitative approaches to heritage science, with work spanning global heritage climatology, collections risk modeling, and Bronze Age artifact analysis. These studies reflect her interdisciplinary approach, combining environmental science, archaeometry, and statistical modeling to address complex heritage conservation challenges.

Dr. Andrews actively engages in teaching and supervision, serving as an MSc Supervisor and Invited Lecturer for the Sustainable Heritage in Practice module. She also participates in professional consultancy work, including program evaluation for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.
