Miranda Mellis is a Professor of Literary Arts and Environmental Humanities at The Evergreen State College. Her teaching integrates contemplative practices, emphasizing accessible, inclusive, and collaborative learning environments. She holds an M.F.A. from Brown University (2004) and a B.A. from Naropa University (2001). Her research spans creative writing, philosophy, and interdisciplinary studies, with a focus on environmental humanities and experimental forms.
Recent works include Crocosmia (forthcoming, 2025), a novel exploring radical social transformation, and The Revolutionary (2023), a nonfiction chapbook. She has received grants from the NEH and residencies at the Headlands Center and Millay Colony. Her essays and poetry appear in Harper’s, Bomb Magazine, and Conjunctions.
Awards include the John Hawkes Prize in Fiction and residencies recognizing her contributions to experimental literature. Her courses address dialogic forms, ecological literature, and the poetics of space. She co-founded The Encyclopedia Project, an experimental publishing initiative, and trained in chaplaincy at Upaya Zen Center (2018–2020).
