Miranda Boettcher

Dr. Miranda Boettcher is a Research Associate at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (since 2020) and Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin (since 2021). Previously, she was at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam (2015-2021). She holds a PhD in Sustainable Development from Utrecht University and an MA in Political Science from Ruprecht Karls Universität Heidelberg.

Her research specializes in:

• Climate and ocean governance frameworks
• Sociopolitical dimensions of carbon dioxide removal (CDR)
• Foresight methodologies for environmental policy
• International governance mechanisms like the BBNJ Agreement
• Discourse analysis of climate engineering

Publication analysis (2015-2025) reveals strong focus on marine CDR governance, policy feasibility assessments, and institutional design for climate interventions. Recent work explores planetary boundaries for carbon storage and develops assessment frameworks for ocean-based removal technologies.

She has co-developed governance instruments including the Code of Conduct for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Research and contributes to UNESCO-IOC climate assessments. Her work bridges academic research with policy development through organizations like SWP Berlin.
