Mira Sulonen

Dr. Mira Sulonen is a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences since November 2019. She holds a PhD in Bioengineering from Tampere University of Technology (Finland, 2017). Her research focuses on sustainable environmental remediation through microbial and electrochemical systems, particularly in water treatment and contaminant removal. She currently leads the GREENER project (H2020 Grant 826312), developing integrated bioelectrochemical systems for contaminated water treatment.

Research interests include electroactive microorganisms, extremophilic bacteria, bioelectrochemical metal recovery, and catalyst optimization for oxygen reduction reactions. Her work bridges microbial ecology with electrochemical engineering to address industrial wastewater challenges. Recent publications emphasize energy recovery in brewery wastewater and anode capacitance quantification in bioelectrochemical systems.

Current projects: GREENER framework for environmental remediation systems. Collaborates on EU-funded initiatives integrating biotechnology and electrochemical methods.
