Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcementمعرفی
Mioara Zoutewelle-Terovan is a Research Fellow at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI), working within the Families and Generations department. Her interdisciplinary research integrates life-course concepts, theories, and methodologies from demography, sociology, psychology, and criminology to examine how disadvantaged backgrounds influence adult outcomes across the life course.
She completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology in Romania, followed by a Master's program in Methodology and Statistics at Leiden University. She earned her PhD from the University of Amsterdam with her dissertation focusing on the relationship between family life events and criminal offending among high-risk populations. Since 2015, she has been affiliated with NIDI as a post-doctoral researcher within an ERC Advanced Grant project.
Dr. Zoutewelle-Terovan's research expertise centers on life-course trajectories, with particular focus on how childhood adversity and non-normative family transitions shape adult outcomes in family formation, well-being, and criminal engagement. She employs sophisticated methodological approaches including causality analysis and cross-national comparative designs to understand how social contexts shape individual life trajectories, especially among disadvantaged populations.
Her recent scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on the interplay between family dynamics and criminal behavior across the life course, with particular attention to timing effects around major life transitions. Her work often examines gender differences and cross-national variations in these processes, contributing significantly to our understanding of how social context moderates life course pathways.
Her major scientific achievements include:
- NWO Veni-grant (2019) for research on children in out-of-home care
- Participation in an ERC Advanced Grant project at NIDI since 2015
- Co-editing the influential volume 'Social background and the demographic life course: Cross-national comparisons' (Springer, 2021)
Dr. Zoutewelle-Terovan has secured significant research funding for projects examining the long-term consequences of growing up in out-of-home care, with particular focus on how youth disadvantage affects adult family transitions, employment behavior, and criminal engagement. Her methodological expertise includes advanced statistical techniques for longitudinal and cross-national data analysis, including meta-analysis approaches for small sample sizes.
Her research is conducted within NIDI's Families and Generations department, which focuses on how family dynamics intersect with broader social structures to shape individual life courses across different national contexts, with particular attention to vulnerable populations and intergenerational transmission of disadvantage.
