Minoru Tomozawa is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he has been a faculty member since 1969. He holds a Ph.D. in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania (1968).
His research focuses on glass science, particularly in mass transport, surface stress relaxation, and reliability of silica glass materials. He has contributed to understanding birefringence, diffusion processes, and mechanical deformation in optical fibers and silicate glasses.
Recent publications highlight his work on
- low-temperature bubble formation in silica glass (2025)
- crack tip internal friction analysis (2025)
- water diffusion-stress correlations (2023)
- photoelastic validation of stress relaxation models (2021)
- and surface deformation in optical fibers (2020)
Professional recognitions include
- Fellow of the American Ceramic Society
- Chair of the Glass and Optical Materials Division, American Ceramic Society
He is affiliated with research centers such as the Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES) and the Center for Materials, Devices, and Integrated Systems (CMDIS), focusing on energy materials and advanced glass technologies.
