Mingming Tan is a Research Fellow at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT), affiliated with the School of Engineering and Applied Science under the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University. Additionally, they hold a Visiting Research Fellow position at the University of Warwick.
Education: Completed a PhD in fiber laser-based amplification in coherent transmission systems, supervised by Professors Peter Harper and Sergei Turitsyn at Aston University.
Research interests focus on advanced optical communication technologies, including optical fiber communications, Raman amplification, fiber lasers, semiconductor lasers, free-space optical communications, and radio-over-fiber systems. Their work emphasizes high-capacity transmission, nonlinear effects mitigation, and amplifier optimization across multiple bands (S, C, L, etc.).
Publications and Grants: Authored/co-authored over 130 papers, securing grants from Royal Society, Innovate UK, EPSRC, and industrial partners. Served as principal investigator (PI) or co-investigator (Co-I) on projects involving Raman amplification and optical systems.
Awards: Recipient of notable accolades including the Outstanding Chinese Student Award, IEEE Best Student Paper Awards (ACP 2014/2015), and the Great Britain-China Educational Trust Award.
Teaching: Leads modules on Optical Communications Systems (EE3OPC/EE4OPC) and Digital Communication & Information Theory (EE3DCI/EE4DCI). Member of EPSRC Peer Review College and Optica, with Fellow status from Advance HE.
Labs/Teams: Active in AiPT, contributing to collaborative research networks and serving on technical committees for conferences like ICTON, PIERS, and IEEE-SUM.
