Ming-chun Ku is an Associate Professor of Sociology at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, and a visiting scholar at the Center for Chinese Studies, UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on heritage politics, tourism, and social change in China.
She is currently investigating the ICH-ization (Intangible Cultural Heritage) of popular religion in China, analyzing how cultural governance intersects with political-religious dynamics amid evolving state-society relations. Her work highlights the implications of heritagization as a tool for negotiating power, identity, and modernity.
Her publications explore ritual economies, tourist-site interactions (e.g., Mogao Caves), and the multiplicity of imaginaries in heritage contexts. These studies bridge sociology, cultural studies, and political science, emphasizing how heritage practices reflect broader societal transformations.
