Ming Dong Gu is the Katherine R. Cecil Professor of Foreign Languages and Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at the University of Texas at Dallas, affiliated with the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1999) and M.A. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996) and the University of Kent at Canterbury (1987).
His research spans comparative literature, poetics, critical theory, and cross-cultural studies, with a focus on Chinese and Western intellectual traditions. Key works include Sinologism: An Alternative to Orientalism and Post-colonialism (2013), Routledge Handbook of Modern Chinese Literature (2018), and The Nature and Rationale of Zen/Chan and Enlightenment (2024). He has published over 170 articles in leading journals such as Philosophy East & West, Journal of Chinese Philosophy, and Dao.
Prof. Gu serves as a special consultant to the Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism and an editorial board member for multiple journals. He has organized major international conferences, including the 2019 International Comparative Literature Association Forum in Shenzhen. His work bridges Eastern and Western thought, emphasizing the relevance of traditional Chinese philosophy to contemporary global challenges.
Grant activities include evaluations for the Research Grant Council (Hong Kong), MacArthur Fellowship nominations, and advisory roles for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings since 2013. He directs the UT Dallas Confucius Institute and co-edits volumes on Chinese-Western cultural dialogue.
