Milica Muminovic

Milica Muminovic is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture within the Built Environment Program at the University of Canberra's Faculty of Arts and Design. Her expertise spans architectural and urban design, place identity, and sustainable architecture with a focus on capturing transformations in the built environment that maintain cultural and spatial identities through interdisciplinary case studies.

Education

• Ph.D. in Architecture from Keio University, Japan (2013)

Her research integrates lived experiences from Europe to Southeast Asia (with emphasis on Japan) to develop qualitative mapping methodologies for public spaces. Current work examines Canberra's residential neighborhoods through subjective and objective urban mapping, exploring how design interventions affect place identity in suburban contexts. She investigates sustainable materials and bioclimatic design applications in extreme climates, building on her 2012 award-winning sustainable housing prototype in Hokkaido.

Recent publications reveal strong thematic concentration on urban morphology and public space design, particularly analyzing Canberra's urban fabric and schoolyard environments. Her work demonstrates consistent focus on adolescent spatial preferences, vest-pocket urban interventions, and cross-regional sustainable design frameworks between Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Dr. Muminovic supervises PhD students with five completed research projects to date. Her active grant portfolio includes the Kamberra Research Project (2019-2024) on public space resilience, 'Public spaces in central residential neighbourhoods' (2021-2022), and the RMIT PhD collaboration 'Design and Architecture Practice' (2015-2018). She contributes to the Australia and New Zealand Urban Morphology Network (ANZUMN) and regularly presents invited talks on urban transformation, slow cities, and sustainable design approaches.
