Milena Viceconte is a Lecturer in Art History at the Universitat de Lleida, Spain. She holds a PhD from the University of Naples Federico II (cotutelle with Universitat de Barcelona) awarded in 2013. Her research focuses on the cultural and visual responses to disasters in early modern Europe and Latin America, particularly analyzing how disasters shaped religious practices, political communication, and artistic expression.
She was a postdoctoral researcher on the ERC-funded project DisComPoSE (Disasters, Communication and Politics in Southwestern Europe), where she explored disaster imagery in the early modern period. Currently, she collaborates with the PRIN project VeLoCi (The Vesuvian Lost Cities before the ‘Discovery’) at the University of Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’, studying early modern visual testimonies of cities buried by the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Her work bridges art history, cultural studies, and disaster research, with publications addressing topics such as volcanic eruptions in print culture, earthquake iconography in colonial Guatemala, and the role of saints in disaster mitigation narratives. She has edited volumes on volcanic eruptions in early modern Europe and co-authored studies on saints and officials addressing disasters in the early modern period.
