Mildred McAfee (1900–1994) was an influential academic administrator and leader. She served as President of Wellesley College (1936–1948), Dean of Women at Centre College (1926–1932), and Acting Professor of Economics and Sociology at Tusculum College. During World War II, she became the first female U.S. Navy officer, leading the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) as Lieutenant-Commander and later Captain. She championed liberal arts education, advocating for women’s intellectual and social development.
- Education: BA in Economics, Sociology, and English from Vassar College (1920, Phi Beta Kappa); MA in Sociology from the University of Chicago (1928).
Her research interests included sociology, women’s education, and the intersection of religion with social reform. She emphasized truth as the core of academic pursuit and believed liberal arts prepared students for life, not just careers. Post-retirement, she contributed to UNESCO, the Ford Foundation, and religious organizations like the General Council of Congregational Christian Churches.
