Mikko Kuisma is a Lecturer and Program Lead in the Master of Public Policy and Social Change programme at the University of Tübingen, where he is also a member of the Research Unit Comparative Public Policy within the Institute of Political Science. He joined the University of Tübingen in October 2017 after previously serving as a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Oxford Brookes University from 2006 to 2017.
Dr. Kuisma's educational background includes:
- BSocSc in Political Science from the University of Birmingham (2000)
- PhD in Political Science from the University of Birmingham (2004)
His research interests focus primarily on the comparative politics and political economy of European welfare states, with special attention to the role of ideas and identity as expressed through political discourse in welfare capitalism. He also conducts research on European populist radical right parties, new institutional theory, citizenship theory, and Nordic politics. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical analysis of policy developments across European contexts.
Dr. Kuisma has received notable recognition through prestigious fellowships:
- ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Birmingham (2004)
- Jean Monnet Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence (2005-2006)
As an educator, Dr. Kuisma teaches seminars on "Qualitative Research Methods and Ethics," "Nationalism and Social Policy in Europe," and "Ideas, Discourses, and Public Policy." He has previously taught courses on "Varieties of Capitalism" and "Comparative Public Policy." Since 2018, he has served as the Managing Editor of the Journal of European Social Policy, demonstrating his active engagement with scholarly publication and academic discourse in his field.
Dr. Kuisma is part of the Comparative Public Policy research team at Tübingen, collaborating with colleagues including Alparslan Akkus, Cecilia Bruzelius, Julia Buchner, and others on research related to European social policy and political economy.
