Mikko Kanerva is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Environmental Engineering at Tampere University, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. His research focuses on computational materials science, biocomposites, and advanced composites, emphasizing sustainable and programmable materials. He leads the Plastics and Elastomer Technology research group, collaborating with academic and industrial partners globally. His work integrates synthesis, experimental characterization, and numerical modeling to address challenges in composite material durability and multi-scale mechanical behavior.
He holds positions in several academic-industrial societies, including the Finnish Plastics Industries Federation (board member), International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (PC), and SAMPE Finland (chair). His research spans composite interfaces, material degradation under environmental conditions, and bio-based materials innovation.
Key trends in his publications include: 1) advanced composite characterization techniques (e.g., microbond tests, SEM analysis), 2) environmental sustainability in material design, and 3) aerospace applications of composite materials. His work bridges fundamental science and industrial applications, with a focus on multi-disciplinary approaches combining experiments and simulations.
Current research emphasizes scalable composite materials for mechanical strength, bio-compatibility, and programmatic compostability. He advises on material selection for military and civilian aircraft structures, and collaborates on developing natural-source sandwich cores and bio-derived polymers.
