Mike Weed

Mike Weed serves as Professor of Applied Policy Sciences and Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and Business Development) at Canterbury Christ Church University. Previously Head of the School of Human Life Sciences and Director of the Centre for Sport, Physical Education and Activity Research (SPEAR), he provides strategic leadership for research, knowledge exchange, enterprise, and research integrity across the institution.

His interdisciplinary research integrates social psychology, sociology, economics, and policy science to inform public health, physical activity, sport, and tourism policy. Key projects include systematic reviews of major events' health benefits, analyses of evidence use in physical activity policy development, and evaluations of interventions like Change4Life for inactive populations. Funded by the Department of Health, ESRC, Youth Sport Trust, and others, his work directly influences governmental policy and practice.

As Strategic Director of SPEAR, he leads sport and physical activity research initiatives. He also holds editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sport and Tourism (Routledge) and Editor of the SAGE Library of Sport and Leisure Management, with additional roles on editorial boards for Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health and Psychology of Sport and Exercise. His REF2021-period outputs include 10 journal articles, two books, seven book chapters, and five funder reports, with research cited in Parliamentary debates and ministerial addresses.
