Dr. Mike Simmonds is a researcher affiliated with the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Reading. His work focuses on environmental change and human adaptation, with expertise in paleoecology, archaeobotany, and climate history. He holds a PhD from the University of Reading (2017), exploring environmental changes during the Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic in Southeast England.
His research interests span interdisciplinary topics such as climate resilience in Andean farming communities, pre-Hispanic agricultural practices, and Holocene environmental dynamics in Europe and South America. He employs methods like phytolith and pollen analysis to reconstruct past ecosystems and human-environment interactions.
Notable contributions include studies on terrace agriculture in the Peruvian Andes, glacial and Holocene environmental shifts in the Apennines, and Mesolithic resource utilization in Surrey. His work bridges archaeology, ecology, and climatology, addressing contemporary challenges through historical ecological frameworks.
Simmonds collaborates on international projects, such as the ACCESS initiative exploring climate change adaptation in the Andes. He has published in journals like Vegetation History and Archaeobotany, Quaternary Science Reviews, and Anthropocene, and contributed to edited volumes on archaeological sites like Petersfield Heath and Woking Palace.
