Dr. Mike Short is a globally recognized telecommunications expert with over 40 years of industry experience, currently holding visiting professor positions at the Universities of Surrey, Coventry, Leeds, and Lancaster. As co-founder of the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre, he drives research at the intersection of mobile technology and societal applications. His career spans executive leadership at Telefonica Europe and strategic consultancy through Airedale Advisors.
Research focuses on 5G infrastructure development and its implementation across smart cities, IoT ecosystems, and digital health services. Dr. Short pioneered innovations through five generations of mobile technology, with emphasis on practical deployments in transport telematics, emergency response systems, and connected vehicle networks.
Key honors include:
- Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, 2012)
- Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng)
- Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET)
Professional engagements encompass board memberships with Smart London and EM3 LEP, plus chairing BEIS's national Science and Innovation Audit. His industry tenure at Telefonica involved launching mobile data services, establishing the Wayra startup accelerator, and advising on international spectrum auctions.
Dr. Short leads the 5G Innovation Centre at Surrey, a £70M research facility collaborating with 50+ industry partners including BT, Vodafone, and Samsung to commercialize next-generation wireless technologies.
