Mike Phillips

Professor Mike Phillips is a leading academic in Interdisciplinary Arts at the University of Plymouth, serving as Director of Research at i-DAT.org and Research Lead at the School of Art, Design and Architecture. His work focuses on data as a creative material, exploring its potential to reveal hidden phenomena through immersive technologies. He directs the Fulldome Immersive Vision Theatre (IVT), a transdisciplinary platform collaborating with medical, astronomical, and environmental fields. Phillips also leads CODEX, an international PhD network linking UK and Chinese institutions.

His career spans over three decades, including founding the Institute of Digital Art and Technology (i-DAT) in 2000 and contributing to projects such as the STI Project (Wellcome Trust-funded) and E/M/D/L (European mobile dome lab). Phillips has secured millions in research funding from AHRC, EPSRC, and EU initiatives like CogNovo (€4.1m). He has supervised 80+ PhD completions and examined across 21 international universities.

Research interests include data visualization, nanotechnology art (e.g., 'Exposure' at UCLA), and the ethical implications of immersive technologies.
