Dr. Mike Perschon is an Associate Professor and Discipline Advisor in the Department of English at MacEwan University, where he has taught since 2008. He holds a PhD from the University of Alberta and specializes in film studies, comics, and speculative fiction. His research focuses on steampunk, fantasy, horror, and the intersection of psychology with narrative structures. He hosts the podcast Triple Bladed Sword, exploring fantasy, sci-fi, and horror media.
His academic interests include apocalyptic narratives, kaiju films, role-playing game history, and the adaptation of literary works into other media. Perschon is available to supervise senior students’ independent study projects. He has published extensively on steampunk, including his book Steampunk FAQ and peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from Jules Verne’s influence to Terry Pratchett’s subversion of heroic archetypes.
Awarded MacEwan University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2015, Perschon actively contributes to professional associations like the Science Fiction Research Association. His work bridges academic scholarship with popular culture, making complex theories accessible through engaging formats like his podcast and FAQ-style writing.
