Mike Moore

Michael Moore is a Professor of Biology at Oberlin College, affiliated with the Biology Department. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas (2005), an M.S. from the University of Illinois (1999), and a B.S. from the College of William and Mary (1995). His research focuses on plant systematics, evolutionary biology, and molecular phylogenetics, particularly exploring plant evolution on gypsum soils in the Chihuahuan Desert and the phylogenomics of flowering plants.

Moore's lab emphasizes fieldwork, lab analyses, and computational methods, leveraging Oberlin's supercomputing resources. He has mentored numerous undergraduates, many of whom are listed in his lab's publications and photos. Notable collaborations include securing a $500,000 NSF grant for high-performance computing infrastructure.

His research spans three key areas: gypsum-endemic plant evolution, Hawaiian plant breeding systems, and flowering plant phylogenomics. He has published extensively on topics like gypsophily, plastid genome evolution, and biogeography. Moore teaches courses in organismal biology, plant systematics, and biogeography, emphasizing hands-on learning and conservation biology.
