Dr. Mike McCormick is a Professor of Biology and Chair of Geosciences at Hamilton College. He holds the Joel W. Johnson Family Professorship of Environmental Science and has a shared teaching appointment in the Geosciences Department. His research explores microbial ecology in geochemical gradients, electron transfer processes between bacteria and minerals, and silicate weathering as a CO2 reduction mechanism.
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University
- Ph.D. and M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan
His work bridges microbiology, geochemistry, and environmental science, with field studies in permanently redox-stratified lakes like Fayetteville Green Lake and Antarctic marine systems. Recent projects focus on microbial carbon cycling, uranium isototope dynamics, and iron sulfide preservation mechanisms.
Dr. McCormick has received the U.S. Antarctic Service Medal (2010), Hamilton College's Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award (2007), and the CH2M-Hill Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award (2003). He has secured grants from the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy for polar and subsurface science research.
As a member of professional societies including the American Society for Microbiology and Geological Society of America, he contributes to interdisciplinary research on climate change impacts and ancient ocean analogs. His lab employs multidisciplinary approaches to study microbial processes in extreme environments.
