Dr. Mike Jones is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Research Centre for Deep History, Australian National University (ANU), and holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Indigenous and Colonial Histories at the University of Tasmania. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in ANU's School of History (2019–2023) on the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Laureate Program, focusing on Australia’s pre-1788 Indigenous history. He earned his PhD in History from the University of Melbourne (conferred 2019) and holds an MA and ASAP qualification.
His research interests span relationality, digital humanities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, museum documentation, and collections management. He explores how institutions conceptualize and manage collections-based knowledge, particularly through field books and anthropological data. His work bridges deep time studies, Indigenous narratives, and scientific evidence to reframe Australia’s historical narratives.
Key projects include the ARC FL170100121 Laureate Program and collaborations with the Research Centre for Deep History. His publications analyze Linked Open Data in GLAM sectors, mapping deep histories, and decolonizing methodologies. He actively engages with museums and archives, advocating for ethical, relational approaches to cultural heritage.
