Mikael Sonesson is an Associate Professor in Orthodontics at the Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University. He serves as program director of research education at the faculty and director of the postgraduate program in Orthodontics.
Dr. Sonesson earned his certificate in Orthodontics in 2008 and defended his thesis "On minor salivary glands in children, adolescents and young adults" at Malmö University in 2011.
His research focuses on clinical aspects of orthodontics including retention, malocclusions and quality of life among adolescents, biomarkers, and prevention of adverse effects in orthodontic patients. His recent work has examined fluoride mouthrinses for caries prevention, equality of orthodontic care for adolescents, reliability of intraoral photographs in treatment assessment, space closure after tooth extraction, and effects of premolar extraction on orthodontic treatment outcomes.
Dr. Sonesson is affiliated with the Advancing Oral Health research profile at Malmö University, which aims to improve oral healthcare through precision medicine, sustainable health practices, health equity, and eHealth implementation.
