Mikael Larsson is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at the Faculty of Theology, Uppsala University, where he also heads the Department of Biblical Studies. He actively contributes to the Swedish Society for Exegesis as Vice-President and engages with film festivals through memberships in Interfilm and jury roles at international events.
His research explores the intersection of the Bible with contemporary culture, emphasizing gender, sexuality, and power dynamics. Larsson's work bridges biblical scholarship with film analysis, particularly focusing on the theological themes in Lars von Trier's films such as Antichrist, Nymphomaniac, and The House that Jack Built.
He has held prestigious positions including a postdoctoral fellowship at Uppsala's Centre for Gender Studies and a research fellowship at the Church of Sweden Research Unit. His recent guest lecture at the Collège de France examined how von Trier's films reinterpret biblical traditions in a post-secular society.
