Prof. Mika Kivimaki is a Professor of Social Epidemiology at University College London (UCL), leading the Mental Health of Older People research group. He holds a PhD from the University of Helsinki (1997) and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 2018. His work focuses on lifecourse epidemiology, particularly the impacts of social determinants, work environments, and health behaviors on aging-related outcomes like dementia, cardiovascular disease, and multimorbidity. He leads large-scale cohort studies such as the Whitehall II cohort and has contributed to global health initiatives including the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention.
Key research areas include:
- Cerebrovascular health and cognitive aging
- Workplace health interventions
- Socioeconomic disparities in health
- Proteomic biomarkers of aging
- Climate change and health
Recent work highlights the role of early-life adversity in multimorbidities, the neuroprotective effects of cognitive stimulation, and the global burden of cerebrovascular diseases. His 2024 Lancet Commission report synthesizes evidence for dementia prevention strategies across populations. Ongoing projects explore the intersection of systemic biology (e.g., plasma proteomics) with aging processes and disease progression.
Major awards include the 2018 Academy of Medical Sciences Fellowship. He collaborates internationally on initiatives such as the Semmelweis Study in Hungary and the Finnish Public Sector Study. His work bridges epidemiological research with public health policy, emphasizing actionable insights for reducing health inequities.
