معرفی
Professor Miia Kivipelto, MD, PhD, is a leading expert in neurogeriatrics and dementia prevention with multiple prestigious appointments. She holds the position of Professor in Neurogeriatrics at the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition within the School of Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland. Additionally, she serves as Professor of Clinical Geriatrics at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and as Chair in Neuroepidemiology and Director of the Ageing Epidemiology Research Unit at Imperial College London, United Kingdom. Professor Kivipelto is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Nordic Brain Network, a multidisciplinary research team comprising approximately 100 researchers and clinical staff across Finland, Sweden, and the UK.
Her research interests center on Alzheimer's disease, cognitive decline, and dementia prevention through multimodal lifestyle interventions. Professor Kivipelto has made significant contributions to understanding how cardiovascular risk factors, nutrition, physical activity, cognitive training, and social engagement can be combined to prevent cognitive impairment. Her work bridges clinical geriatrics with epidemiological research, focusing on translating scientific findings into practical prevention strategies for aging populations.
The extensive body of research associated with Professor Kivipelto demonstrates a clear evolution toward precision medicine approaches in dementia prevention. Her recent publications reveal a shift from single-domain interventions to comprehensive, personalized multimodal strategies that consider individual risk profiles. The research spans diverse populations across multiple continents, reflecting her leadership in global dementia prevention initiatives. A consistent theme across her work is the focus on practical implementation of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings, with particular attention to scalability and sustainability of prevention programs.
Professor Kivipelto actively participates in numerous high-impact research projects including the CAIDE study (1998-2022) and Neuro-Innovation (2021-2026). She serves on leading global dementia task forces including the G8 Dementia Summit, OECD Mapping for big data in Alzheimer research, WHO ministerial meeting on Global actions against dementia, and WHO dementia risk reduction guidelines working group. Her leadership extends to coordinating international collaborations through the World-Wide FINGERS network, which harmonizes dementia prevention trials across multiple countries.
Her laboratory and research teams operate across multiple institutions, with the Nordic Brain Network serving as a central hub connecting researchers from University of Eastern Finland, Karolinska Institutet, and Imperial College London. These teams employ multidisciplinary approaches combining clinical assessments, neuroimaging, biomarker analysis, and digital health technologies to advance dementia prevention science. Current work focuses on developing and testing precision prevention strategies tailored to individual risk profiles, with particular emphasis on making these approaches accessible and implementable in diverse healthcare systems worldwide.
