Miho Mazereeuw

Miho Mazereeuw serves as Associate Professor and Associate Head for Strategy and Equity in the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), School of Architecture and Planning, while also directing the MIT Climate Mission for Empowering Frontline Communities.

Her research focuses on designing resilient urban systems against climate threats including flooding, cyclones, and heat stress through community-centered action research. Leading the Urban Risk Lab, she conducts extensive fieldwork across diverse cultural contexts to embed proactive disaster preparedness into global urbanization trends, emphasizing culturally responsive design solutions.

The Urban Risk Lab executes initiatives such as the MIT Climate Project, RiskMap, and COPIN Thailand, utilizing community workshops to develop localized resilience strategies. Mazereeuw's forthcoming book Design Before Disaster: Japan's Culture of Preparedness (University of Virginia Press, September 2025) examines Japan's systemic approaches to disaster mitigation.
