Prof. Mihai Emilian Popa is the Director of the Doctoral School of Geology at the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest. He received the Doctor Honoris Causa distinction from the University of Petroșani in October 2023, recognizing his contributions to geological research and collaboration. His work focuses on paleobotanical studies, particularly in the Jiu Valley coal mines of Romania, where he has led field activities alongside doctoral students and undergraduates.
Collaborations with institutions like the University of Petroșani have resulted in significant paleobotanical collections, including fossils from the Petroșani Basin, which are being prepared for a public museum. These fossils highlight the region's geological history and economic significance. Key partners include Prof. Grigore Buia and Assoc. Prof. Csaba Lorinț.
- Research Interests: Paleontology, coal geology, fossil preservation, and interdisciplinary studies linking geology with regional economic history.
- Awards: Doctor Honoris Causa (2023), DHC from University of Petroșani.
Prof. Popa’s advisory work includes mentoring Dr. Roxana Pirnea (PhD) and Dr. Alexandru Călin, whose research contributes to understanding fossil ecosystems and coal formation. His collaborations emphasize trans-institutional partnerships, particularly between sister faculties in Bucharest and Petroșani.
