Miguel Goñi is a Professor in the Department of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. He specializes in marine biogeochemistry, focusing on organic matter cycling in aquatic environments such as oceans, estuaries, and rivers. His research bridges global biogeochemical cycles and paleoclimatology, with a strong emphasis on Arctic and temperate coastal systems.
- Education: B.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Washington (1986, 1992), Postdoctoral Fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1992–1995).
- Professional Roles: Editor-in-Chief of JGR: Biogeosciences (2014–2020), extensive editorial board memberships, and leadership in over 50 oceanographic cruises.
- Research Interests: Processes controlling organic matter transport, preservation in marine sediments, and impacts of climate change on coastal carbon cycles.
Goñi's work spans field expeditions in the Arctic, Pacific Northwest, and Papua New Guinea, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding carbon dynamics. His awards include the NSF CAREER Award (1997) and recognition by the National Academy of Sciences.
Current grants include studies on Arctic carbon dynamics and winter coastal processes. He advises students and collaborates globally, contributing to oceanographic education through courses like OC 507 and OC 522.
Publications highlight Arctic organic matter, river-ocean interfaces, and methodological advancements in organic geochemistry. His research underscores the critical role of coastal margins in global carbon budgets and climate feedbacks.
