Miguel A. Perez-Pinzon, PhD, FAHA is a Professor of Neurology and Vice-Chair for Basic Science at the University of Miami. He serves as Director of the Peritz Scheinberg Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Laboratories, where he leads investigations into cerebral ischemia mechanisms and therapies.
- PhD in Neuroscience/Marine Biology (University of Miami, 1991)
- MS in Marine Biology (University of Miami, 1987)
- BS in Biology (University of Panama, 1983)
His research focuses on cerebral ischemia following stroke or cardiac arrest, targeting synaptic dysfunction, mitochondrial pathology, and ischemic tolerance. Key areas include epigenetic modifications via protein kinase C isoforms, resveratrol, and exercise regimens to enhance neuroprotection. Recent work explores single-cell analysis in cerebrovascular disease.
Scientific awards include:
- Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA)
- Peritz Scheinberg Endowed Professor in Neurology
The CVDRL, established over 55 years ago by Dr. Peritz Scheinberg, employs multidisciplinary approaches to cerebral ischemia research. Dr. Perez-Pinzon’s lab has mentored numerous postdocs and students, building on a legacy that includes renowned investigators like Myron Ginsberg and W. Dalton Dietrich.
