Mickie Lynn Powell

Mickie Lynn Powell is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Program Director at the Department of Biology, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Her research and teaching interests focus on nutrition's role in healthspan and longevity using aquatic model organisms, including sea urchins, zebrafish, and the short-lived killifish Nothobranchius furrier. Previously, she studied hagfish and lampreys—some of the earliest vertebrates—during her postdoctoral work at the University of New Hampshire.

Education:

• B.S. in Mathematics (major) with Biology and Chemistry minors from UAB
• M.S. in Biology from UAB
• Ph.D. in Biology from UAB
• Postdoctoral research at University of New Hampshire

She maintains several hundred aquaria in her lab to study unique vertebrate models of aging and longevity.
