Prof. Michiel van den Brekel is a Full Professor at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), specializing in Maxillofacial Surgery at the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC). His research focuses on head and neck cancers, radiation therapy, and surgical outcomes, with particular emphasis on squamous cell carcinoma and chemoradiotherapy. He has co-authored over 150 publications, including recent studies on postoperative radiotherapy protocols and MRI-based biological feature predictions in head and neck cancers.
His work addresses critical issues such as disease outcomes in HPV-negative cancers, subclassification of T4 carcinomas, and patient-reported impairments following radiation treatment. Collaborations span international teams, reflecting his global impact in oncological research.
Prof. van den Brekel has supervised 7 PhD theses and contributed to interdisciplinary projects like the IMCISION lecture on immuno-modulation therapies for advanced head and neck cancers.
