Michelle Newberry

Mirchelle Newberry is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specifically within the Department of Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology. She holds roles including Programme Director for the BSc Criminology and Psychology, Academic Integrity Lead, and member of multiple research and teaching committees. Her research focuses on understanding motivations behind criminal behavior, particularly violent crimes like murder, domestic violence, and animal cruelty, alongside poaching and illegal wildlife trade. She has conducted studies on animal abuse as a tool for domestic coercion and motivations behind wildlife crime in East Africa.

Dr. Newberry has taught modules such as Criminological Psychology and Penology, and has supervised numerous PhD students. She has received awards including the 2021 Employee Dedication Award and multiple teaching accolades. Her work bridges psychological theory with criminal justice practice, emphasizing deterrent strategies and offender rehabilitation.
