Michelle M. Scherer is Dean of the College of Engineering and Professor of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Previously, she served as Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa (UI) for eight years, founding the College of Engineering's DEI Council and leading Hanson Center for Communication initiatives. She holds a BS from the University of Virginia, MS from University of Connecticut, and PhD from Oregon Graduate Institute. Her research focuses on mineral geochemistry, groundwater cleanup, and lead contamination in drinking water, with over $20M in grants from NSF, DOE, EPA, and others. She has published 83+ papers and trained over 30 graduate students. Her work emphasizes science communication and sustainable water solutions.
- Education:
- BS: Systems Engineering, University of Virginia
- MS: Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Connecticut
- PhD: Environmental Science and Engineering, Oregon Graduate Institute
- Research Interests: Geochemical processes in soils/sediments, lead exposure mitigation, sustainable water engineering, and science communication.
- Grants: NSF, DOE, EPA, HUD, DOD/SERDP, and USDA funding totaling ~$20M.
Her lab pioneered studies on mineral transformations impacting pollutant fate and developed new groundwater remediation strategies. She led transdisciplinary teams addressing urban water safety and DEI in engineering education.
