Michelle Lynn Dion is a Professor of Political Science and Senator Wm. McMaster Chair in Gender & Methodology at McMaster University, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences. She specializes in comparative political economy, research methodology, and gender studies, with a focus on Latin America. Dion holds a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and previously served as Associate Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her work bridges quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze welfare policy, political behavior, and sexuality policy.

Research Interests: Dion’s research examines welfare policy dynamics in developing nations, particularly Mexico and Latin America. She investigates how globalization, political institutions, and labor movements shape social policies. Recent projects include studies on LGBTQ+ rights, citation gender bias in political science, and Indigenous research sovereignty. Her book Workers and Welfare in Latin America (2010) analyzes Mexico’s welfare regime evolution.
Awards & Grants: Fulbright Scholar (2004–05), SSHRC Insight Grant (2016–21), Premio Carlos Monsiváis Award (2019), and multiple fellowships. She co-leads the Visions in Methodology initiative to advance gender equity in academia.
Advisory & Grants: Dion supervises students in comparative social policy, political economy, and gender studies. Her grants include SSHRC-funded projects on LGBTQ+ negotiations in Hamilton (2020) and Indigenous research sovereignty (2017).
Labs/Teams: Academic Director of McMaster’s Spark Centre, co-editor of the American Political Science Review, and founder of the Visions in Methodology network. Collaborates with scholars like Jordi Díez (LGBTQ+ policy) and Tina Fetner (sexuality & public policy).
