Michelle Louise Clarke is a Research Fellow at the University of Bayreuth, conducting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of African Literature, Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics. Her work critically analyzes ecocritical discourse within African Speculative Fiction, exploring how imaginative scenarios can drive tangible policy outcomes for sustainable futures and environmental justice.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD from SOAS, University of London (thesis: deconstruction of colonial imaginings of wilderness, oceanic, and outer space frontiers in African Literatures)
- Research Masters (MRes) in Environment and Development from Lancaster University
Field experience encompasses climate change impact assessments on hibiscus growers in Uganda and oral history research in Ghanaian land dispute cases. Her scholarship bridges literary theory and practical environmental policy, exemplified by her book chapter "New Waves: African Environmental Ethics and Ocean Ecosystems" and editorial on 'African Science Fiction' for Vector, the journal of the British Science Fiction Association.
